Debian Doom Packaging Guidelines
Chapter 3 - Filesystem

3.1 FHS

According to the Filesystem Heirarchy Standard, binaries for games should go into /usr/games and their man pages should reside in section 6.

3.2 IWADs

Doom engines and tools that require an IWAD know to look in /usr/share/games/doom. The following filenames are recognised as IWADs[1]:

doom.wad

Doom or Ultimate Doom

doomu.wad

Ultimate Doom

doom1.wad

Shareware Doom

doom2.wad

Doom 2

doom2f.wad

Doom 2 (French release)

tnt.wad

Final Doom: TNT

plutonia.wad

Final Doom: plutonia

The original Doom games come in a variety of different versions and free alternatives exist for some of them. Packages should not install files to /usr/share/games/doom directly, but instead register an alternative (see Alternatives, Section 3.3).

3.3 Alternatives

3.3.1 IWADs

Packages which provide an IWAD listed in IWADs, Section 3.2 should register an alternative for the filename within the IWAD directory.

If the IWAD being provided is an official IWAD (i.e. the commercial game data from ID Software) the alternative should be registered with a priority of 50.

If the IWAD being provided is a 3rd-party IWAD (such as freedoom), the alternative should be registered with a priority of 25 or less.

3.3.2 Engines

Packages providing a Doom engine should install an alternative for /usr/games/doom at priority 50.
