IWAD

a WAD file required to play Doom (I for ID)

PWAD

a "patch" .wad, containing replacement resources

engine

A Doom Engine is the executable-half of a doom game.

Boom

A popular doom engine which provided many features not present in the original Doom. Many modern engines support the boom feature set, but not all do.

port

the original source release was ported to DOS from linux. Most subsequently-derived engines have been known as "ports" within the Doom community, but are more properly known as engines.
